It is made with only a single bellows and its end connections, flanges, loose flanges (Van Stone) or weld ends. Its use is to absorb axial compression and/or extension movements, as shown in the figure beside. The single axial expansion joint with tie rods is used to absorb a small amount of lateral deflection. Whenever the installation allows the use of tie rods to eliminate axial movement and pressure force, this style of expansion joint simplify and reduce the installation cost. When the amount of axial movement exceeds the maximum allowable for a single expansion joint a double axial joint with an intermediate anchor is typically used. Each unit then absorbs the movement from the side in which it is installed, acting as individual axial joints on each side of the intermediate anchor.

 

Universal and Tied Universal

Universal

Universal Expansion Joints are used to absorb large amounts of lateral deflection. The joint utilizes two bellows with an interconnecting pipe called Center Spool. The Center Spool angulates, allowing for large lateral displacements.

 

Universal with Tie Rods

When it is not possible to have anchors to support the pressure force, the universal expansion joint is manufactured with tie rods, as shown on the figure below. The tie rods contain the pressure force as well as the thermal expansion/contraction of the Center Spool.

Hinged

The hinged Expansion joints are used to absorb lateral deflection in only one plane. They are usually used as a combination of two or three. The hinges are designed to absorb all the pressure force and may be designed to support the weight of piping and equipment. This feature can help simplify the design and cost of the piping system.

The hinges are designed to absorb all the pressure force, simplifying the anchors that support the pipeline.

Gimbal

Gimbal expansion joints are used to absorb movements in different planes, which provides the same advantages of hinged expansion joints, in multi-plane applications. Gimbal Expansion Joints can be designed to absorb the weight of the piping and equipment simplifying and reducing costs of installations in multi-plane movement applications.

Pressure Balanced

Pressure Balanced Expansion Joints use a combination of bellows and tie devices to absorb the movement without imposing pressure loading on the equipment or piping system, the only resulting force is the spring rate, which is normally of lower magnitude. They can be designed to absorb axial or lateral movements.

Toroidal

With a balloon or omega shape convolution, the toroidal cross section is superior for high pressure capacity, but is limited to small deflections. Since its cross section results in lower pressure stresses than the “U” shaped convolution it provides advantages in high temperature applications, where materials operate with reduced physical properties. These expansion joints are used mostly in Shell and Tube heat exchangers.

Pantographic

This type of expansion joint has a special pantograph linkage (a scissors-like device) that distributes and controls the movement equally between the two bellows of the universal joint throughout its full range of movement. Pantograph linkages are not designed to restrain pressure thrust.

Rectangular

Rectangular expansion joint is used basically with low pressure media. It can be single axial, to absorb axial movements, or universal to absorb lateral deflections. They are mostly used in high temperature duct systems.

There are four corner configurations, as shown in the figure below.

Heavy Wall

These are typically used for applications on shell and tube heat exchangers, acid pipe lines or wherever thin walled bellows are not considered to be durable.

Single or multiple convolutions can be manufactured and dependent on the design conditions they can be easily assembled to various end connections to form hinged, gimbal or tied expansion joints.
